Automotive

Autonomous vehicles (AVs) represent a major innovation for the automotive industry. Autonomous cars detect surroundings with a variety of techniques such as RADAR, LIDAR, GPS, Odometry and computer vision to sense their environment. Advanced Control Systems that are integrated into the car can interpret the sensory inputs to detect signboards or to avoid collision.

Electronic components are increasingly being incorporated in vehicles and enhanced in the automobile industry. This proliferation has been continuing since the 90's. Electronic components have found their way into navigation systems, electronic ignition, fuel injection, stabilisers and a myriad of other areas. The key areas using electronic components can be summarised into 4 major categories :

  1. Performance, Fuel Efficiency and Environmental Sustainability
  2. Active & Passive Safety, Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS)
  3. Comfort, Aesthetics and Security
  4. Infotainment

Safety is the most important consideration for consumers. Government regulations for the automobile sector have provided the impetus for including electronics into vehicles especially in the area of driver and passenger safety, chiefly, features designed to address collision avoidance to survivability.

Demand for monitoring, warning, braking, and steering control systems are expected to increase over the next decade, fueled largely by regulatory and consumer interest in safety applications that protect drivers and reduce accidents.

Leadframe packages are some of the most diverse components found throughout the automobile. SOIC, TSSOP, SSOP and PDIP packages support such functions like tyre pressure monitoring system (TPMS), drive train chassis and braking safety systems. TQFP & MQFP house microcontrollers for engine control systems. Even SOT/SCs, LQFP’s and PLCC’s are found within the automotive platform.
